The microbes doing the work need water to survive — but push past a certain point and you drive out oxygen, and the pile turns anaerobic and starts to ferment instead of decompose. The Squeeze Test
The squeeze test is the easiest field check there is: grab a handful and squeeze firmly. At optimal moisture (50–65%), you'll get 1–2 drops of water out of it — about what you'd expect from a well wrung-out sponge. It doesn't hold up as well on coarse materials like wood chips or straw, since they don't compress the same way; for those, use the oven-dry method instead.

Adding Water

It accounts for something easy to miss — the water you add becomes part of the pile too, so the total weight keeps shifting as you go. Add it gradually while turning, since coarse and woody materials soak it up slowly, and it's a lot easier to fix a pile that's too dry than one you've oversaturated.
A worked example
Say your pile weighs 100 lb and the squeeze test comes back dry — call it 40% moisture — and you're aiming for the 55% target. The obvious move is to add "the missing 15%," or 15 lb of water. That's not enough. Run the formula above and you get W_add = 100 lb × (0.55 − 0.40) / (1 − 0.55), which works out to roughly 33 lb of water — roughly 4 gallons — more than double what the naive math suggested. The gap comes from the fact that the water you're adding also adds to the pile's total weight, so you're chasing a percentage of a number that keeps growing. That's the correction the calculator handles automatically, and it's also why it's so easy to overshoot by eye — "a bit more water" almost always turns into too much.
